whats new? 9th September 2008.  30 Storey Velocity Tower Approved                 what do you think?

AXIS's Velocity Tower redesign in Sheffield has been approved by Sheffield City councillors on to a new height of 30 storeys with a 18 storey  'mini'  tower and link block to replace the wing originally planned for Cala Homes.

– but Sheffield warned that this may be as high as they would be prepared to see it go.

Another application is still lodged to extend the tower, on St Mary's Gate, to 36 storeys.
This vertical extension to the striking green glass tower will mean it can continue to rise to 90 meters, the tallest building in Sheffield prior to the completion of St Paul's Tower.

It is envisaged it will be topped by two wind turbines to provide electricity for the new building.

Councillors also approved plans for second tower of 18 storeys and a four-storey 'link' block in place of a previously-approved 13-storey wing.

Councillor Alan Whitehouse stated: "This thing just gets higher and higher. I have enjoyed watching it go up. It is very visible, not just from around the city centre but even from Ringinglow. Thirty storeys is acceptable. Thirty-six and I begin to wonder."

We believe the consent is an acceptable compromise although the 30 storey plan means that plans for a spectacular sky bar with views across the city would not be possible.

The additional floors will largely form a apart hotel, bringing exciting new facilities to visitors wishing staying in Sheffield.
